The Celebration Behind the Music

What does it mean to play the music of Tom Petty

Playing Tom Petty as a tribute band is a strange kind of honesty, because everybody in the room already knows the deal: you're not him, you never will be, and nobody's pretending otherwise. Petty spent forty years singing about ordinary people refusing to be small — running down a dream, not backing down, learning to fly — and the moment he died, those songs stopped belonging to one man and started belonging to everybody who ever needed them. So when you step up and play them, you're not impersonating a rock star, you're keeping a promise: that a guy from Gainesville who wrote about truck stops and heartbreak and standing your ground still gets to walk into a bar on a Friday night and make a room full of strangers feel like they're somebody. The trick is disappearing into it. The best tribute isn't the band showing off how well they can copy the record, it's the moment the crowd forgets to compare and just sings along, because for three minutes the song is theirs again, and so is he.

Music is probably the only real magic I have encountered in my life. There's not some trick involved with it. It's pure and it's real. It moves, it heals, it communicates and does all these incredible things!   — Tom Petty
